Update 7 February: To the suprise of nobody, al-Jazeera is now broadcasting al-Awlaki's terrorist rhetoric and incitement. As I predicted, al-Awlaki has suddenly become less mealy-mouthed and more overtly vicious.

Anwar al-Awlaki is wanted dead or alive

The claim by Dana Priest at the Washington Post and at CBS that subsequent to the airstrike in Shabwah on 24 December "he has since been added to a shortlist of U.S. citizens specifically targeted for killing or capture by the JSOC" is correct.

Now that al-Awlaki is wanted by the USA, other al-Qa'ida members can trust him more than they could previously. AQ could well use a new anglophone propagandist; at the moment all they've got are Adam Gadahn and Omar Hammami. Meanwhile al-Awlaki would be safer in Somalia with the vicious Wahhabi Shabaab gang with whom he has at least a little affiliation, and he would then be able to communicate with his followers in the English-speaking world via the internet and via al-Jazeera.

Anwar al-Awlaki still unaccounted for

After years of nursing the self-pity and grandiosity of his anglophone gutter audience, Anwar al-Awlaki's career took an abrupt turn on 24 December 2009 when an airstrike was delivered to his al-Qa'ida friends in spite of the chance of killing al-Awlaki in the process. The "martyrdom" that he encourages other Islamists to pursue, he himself nearly received and is now in line for, assuming that he is still alive. If I understand that cult leader, and I think I do, he will be deeply shocked -- shocked into silence, temporarily, and shocked into hiding, possibly at Eman University in Sana'a (a cult compound run by terrorism financier and gun-runner Abdul-Majid az-Zindani).

At present the facts available about al-Awlaki are mostly negative ones. No terrorist cleric or terrorist financier, nor any of the Londonistani al-Qa'ida people, has jumped up to protest the Shabwah raid and make dire imprecations about a forthcoming AQ response. The raid in Shabwah is getting relative little enemy discussion and no reliable reporting in the internet forums, presumably because (1) it was a disaster for al-Qa'ida, and (2) not many enemy in that location lived to tell about what happened, and those who did are on the run.

If al-Awlaki was privy to the Christmas Day airliner plot, then he must be in a state of consternation to know Abdulmutallab is still alive and in American custody. That wasn't in the script. Al-Awlaki wants all his followers dead, not only because he never saw a corpse he didn't love, but also because dead terrorists tell no tales.

Update: CNN is now looking at Eman University and Zindani.

If al-Awlaki reaches the safety of Zindani's bizarre "university", he will be able to communicate on the internet. If he does so communicate, then his words may well be shaped to ingratiate himself with Zindani. Specifically, if al-Awlaki goes out of his way to make excuses for Hamas, then it can be taken as evidence that he is in Eman U. That is because, although Hamas has been in al-Qa'ida's bad books since August 2009 when they killed off the AQ startup group called Jund Ansar Allah, Hamas still has the firm support of Zindani's money and his weapons-smuggling apparatus.

Don't go the website of Eman University unless you have reliable security software running.

AQAP's claim of the bombing attempt against an American airliner on Christmas Day. The right-to-left text is a bit garbled. The claim is surely authentic because al-Qa'ida's collaborators in al-Jazeera have not removed it from their terrorist forum.

وقد قام الأخوة المجاهدون في قسم التصنيع بالتوصل بفضل الله إلى عبوة ذات تقنية متطورة، وتم تجربتها وثبت نجاحها وفاعليتها كما تم تمريرها على أجهزة الكشف، وقد وصل الأخ الاستشهادي عمر إلى هدفه بفضل الله، ولكن بقدر من الله حدث خلل فني أدى إلى عدم الانفجار الكامل، وإننا سنواصل الطريق بإذن الله حتى نصل لما نريد، ويكون الدين كله لله.

وندعو كل مسلم غيور على دينه وعقيدته أن يقوم بإخراج المشركين من جزيرة العرب، وذلك بقتل كل صليبي يعمل في السفارات أو غيرها، وأعلنوها حرباً شاملة على كل صليبي في جزيرة محمد صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم في البر والبحر والجو.

وندعو كل جندي يعمل في الجيوش الصليبية والحكومات العميلة أن يتوب إلى الله ويحذوا حذوَ الأخ البطل المجاهد نضال حسن، ويقوم بقتل كل صليبي بكل وسائل القتل المتاحة له نصرة لدين الله وإعلاء لكلمته في الأرض.

ومن هنا نقول للشعب الأمريكي بما أنكم تدعمون قادتكم وتقفون خلفهم في قتل نساءنا وأطفالنا، فابشروا بما يسوؤكم فقد جئناكم بالذبح وأعددنا لكم رجالاً يحبون الموت كما تحبون الحياة، وبإذن الله سنأتيكم بما لا قِبل لكم به، فكما تقتلون تُقتلون وإن غداً لناظره قريب.

وسيعلم الذين ظلموا أي منقلب ينقلبون
اللهم ثبت الأخ المجاهد عمر الفاروق على الحق، وأنزل عليه السكينة والصبر والثبات أضعاف ما نزل به من البلاء، اللهم فرج همه ونفس كربه، واجعل له فرجاً ومخرجاً قريباً من حيث لا يحتسب، اللهم فك أسره وأسرى المسلمين في مشارق الأرض ومغاربها غير مغيرين ولا مبدلين ثابتين على الحق برحمتك يا أرحم الراحمين، اللهم انصر عبادك المجاهدين في كل مكان واهزم الشرك وأهله، وآخر دعوانا أن الحمد لله رب العالمين.

The reports all agree that the target was a gathering of Al-Qa'ida in the Arabian Peninsula, and the death toll was upwards of 30. But they don't agree on much else. It is firm that Muhammad Ahmad Salih al-'Umur is dead, just one day after al-Jazeera broadcast some of his propaganda. Several other emirs or semi-emirs are probably dead, including the last two of the four members of the original shurah of the reconstituted AQAP. Those are Naser Abdul-Karim al-Wahishi and Sa'id al-Shihri.

It would excellent news if Anwar al-Awlaki was killed, but that is no certainty from where I'm sitting.

The general cloak of silence over this important development makes me suspect that additional attacks against AQAP are in preparation or under way. Al-Jazeera's terrorist forum, where AQ would be very quick to make its routine eulogies and threats of revenge, is offline, and some Yemeni private news outlets seem to be in the dark more than is usual for them. So, I figure there are not just some pieces yet to fill in to this good story, but additional good news in the offing.

Update: The al-Jazeera terrorist forum is back up, but up to this moment it contains nothing about the Shabwah affair except a rather small volume of the predictable Arab bombast.

Al-Qa'ida in the Arabian Peninsula

The following text statement is being distributed by AQ's sympathizers in the UK and elsewhere:

اعتادت وزارة الداخلية الكذب والافتراء وأدمنت عليه وجعلته وسيلة لتبرير فشلها وشماعة لإخفاقها ، فهي كل يوم تعلن أنها قبضت على فلان أو سلم نفسه فلان لإشاعة الأراجيف والتخذيل بين الناس بحثا عن انتصارات موهومة .

طمعا منها في استمرار الدعم كلما ازدادت في الادعاء الكاذب أنها قد نجحت في القبض على أحد المجاهدين أو مطاردته .
ومن مقاصد وزارة الداخلية تثبيط الناس عن الجهاد والمجاهدين بادعائها أنها متيقظة وقادرة على ملاحقة المجاهدين وقد خبرناها خلال السنوات الماضية بهذا الأسلوب الكاذب الفاشل ومما زاد الطين بلة مسارعة أبواقها من الفضائيات إلى نشر تلك الأكاذيب والأراجيف حتى صار لا يدرى من افترى الكذب أولا أهي وزارة الداخلية أم أبواقها الفضائية والتي أضحت تعلن الخبر قبل أن تعلم وزارة الداخلية عن تلك الكذبة والتي يبدوا أن مصدرها إنما هو أوهام الفضائية أو اختلاقها الكذب لعلمنا المسبق حربها للدين وحقدها على الجهاد والمجاهدين .
وعليه فما تداولته وسائل الإعلام مؤخرا من إلقاء القبض على عشرة مجاهدين من خلية قاسم الريمي في شبوة ما هو إلا محض افتراء وكذب .
وحقيقة ما حصل هو الهجوم على بعض قبائل شبوة بالطائرات والدبابات ومن ثم إلقاء القبض على ستة من أبناء القبائل المعتدى عليها بحثا عن انتصارات موهومة .
ونبشركم أن من زعمتم القبض عليهم أنهم قادمون إليكم بإذن الله يحملون الموت وهم من سيقبض أرواحكم فخذوا حذركم فقد انضم إلى كتيبة الأهوال عشرات الاستشهاديين وهم الشجعان حقا أتوكم بما لا تحتسبون ولا قبل لكم به فالحقيقة ما ترون لا ما تفترون.

It is a contradiction of a recent claim by Riyadh about the arrest of some AQ members in Saudi Arabia.

And recently Abu Sufyan put out an audio full of dire emprecations against Saudi Arabia.



The press talked mostly about Abu Sufyan's endorsement of the purely mercenary Somali pirates, which I agree was pretty suprising.

This guy and his tiny group of allies are surely in Yemen.

Training of fighters at al-Emam University denied
The Office Director of Sheik Abdul-Majid al-Zindani, Rector of al-Eman University denied allegations made by some Yemeni websites that there is an open camp to train Jihadi fighters at the University.

“The University is an educational institution which practices only its educational activities, and operates under the supervision of the Ministry of Higher Education. With regard to the allegations concerning voluntary camps for Jihadis, this is not our responsibility, it is the responsibility of the governments of all Arab and Islamic countries to do their duty according to the Islamic Law to defend the oppressed people in Gaza”, said Dr.Ismeal al-Sohaily- Office Director of the Rector of al-Emam University.

Al-Sohaily hailed the calls from President Ali Abdullah Saleh, who called for the opening of training camps for youth to be trained to fight the Israeli’s in Gaza. “We call on them to do their duty. We hail the position of the President Ali Abdullah Saleh, who called for the opening of camps for fighters, and we also hail the position of Libyan President Muammar al-Gaddafi, who has called for the same”, said Dr.Ismeal al-Sohaily.

Some websites in Yemen have reported the existence of training camps at al-Emam University to prepare volunteer fighters for combat in Gaza, and claimed that these camps are supported by Iran and Qatar. President Saleh has called this week for an Islamic Summit to deal with the ongoing crisis in Gaza, and to stop the Israeli atrocities and end the unjustified siege against Palestinians in Gaza. He has also called for increasing pressure on Israel to abide by international law.

Al-Oufi was one of two former Saudi detainees at Guantanamo, the U.S. military prison in Cuba, who resurfaced last week in video clips as al Qaeda fighters in Yemen. Their identities were confirmed in recent days by a U.S. counterterror official. Al-Oufi was detainee number 333 at Guantanamo.

They claim to be the leadership of a reconstituted AQAP with the more modern form of the name, using "qa'idat-al-jihad" or "base of jihad" instead of the original name "al-qa'ida" or "the base".

Almotamar.net, Saba - Yemeni security forces killed two suspected terrorists affiliate of a four-person cell of the al-Qaeda during a security raid against the cell in the Yemeni capital Sana'a.

Security sources said Monday that security forces had attacked a house in Sana'a where the four members of the terrorist cell were hiding in.

"The security forces exchanged fire with the cell and killed two members of the cell, including Saudi citizen Salem Mohammed Magsaf, wanted by Saudi Arabia and Yemen. The second person killed in the operation was Badr Dawod Saleh Mashra'a of the Yemeni province of Hodeida", said the sources.

"Security also arrested the third person of the cell named Abdul Rahman Ali Mohammed al-Ghrabi while the fourth suspected terrorist, Musa'ad Ahmed Naji al-Barari has managed to escape".

The sources pointed out that the security services are currently in pursuit of al-Barari, added that the investigation has begun with the arrested al-Ghrabi.
